What to Engrave: Ideas That Work on Wood (and What Doesn't)

The best things to engrave on wood are short, bold and legible at arm’s length: a logo, a name, a date, GPS coordinates or a quote of ten words or fewer. A laser renders clean lines and solid shapes beautifully; it cannot reproduce photographs or paragraphs of fine text. Below are the engraving ideas that consistently look premium on wood — and the ones we will gently talk you out of at the proof stage.

Five engraving ideas that always work

  1. Your logo. The classic for a reason: burned into wood, a mark feels permanent in a way print never does. Use the one-colour version — a laser draws in shades of burn, not in brand colours.
  2. Names. A first name turns a nice object into that person’s object. A name alone can carry a box lid, a cake topper or a bookmark.
  3. Dates and years. A founding year, an anniversary, or simply “2026” under a logo on a Christmas ornament — small, dignified, and the reason recipients start collecting one piece per December.
  4. Short quotes. One line, ten words or fewer. A motto on a bookmark or a thank-you line on a box lid reads beautifully; a paragraph does not.
  5. Coordinates. The GPS coordinates of your headquarters, your first shop or the town where the company began. Unexpected, personal and graphically clean — they engrave like jewellery.

If you are planning gifts for a whole client list, our personalized corporate gift ideas guide walks through the three ready-made packages — Basic at €17.99, Premium at €35.99 and the Large box at €78.99, all incl. VAT — and the box calculator on the B2B page prices a custom build live while you assemble it.

What does not work on wood

  • Photographic detail. Wood is not photo paper: gradients, shadows and faces lose their subtlety in burn marks. Instead, have the photo redrawn as simple line art, or choose a monogram.
  • Very long text. Small letters close up and drown in the grain. Instead, cut it to one strong line and put the rest in the card.
  • Hairline strokes and tiny fonts. Ultra-thin lines can vanish into the wood’s texture. Instead, use medium-weight lettering — we flag risky artwork at the proof stage.
  • Colour-dependent designs. Engraving is monochrome by nature; a logo that relies on colour contrast loses its logic. Instead, send the single-colour or outline version.

None of this is a weakness of the material so much as its character — the grain, warmth and permanence are exactly why wooden corporate gifts age so well.

Files, proofs and how the process protects you

Upload your artwork as PDF, SVG or PNG directly in the enquiry form. Vector files (SVG or PDF) are ideal because they scale cleanly to any size; a sharp, high-resolution PNG works too. From there:

  1. Quote within 24 hours — concrete prices for your exact idea, not an autoresponder.
  2. Design proof before production. You see the design exactly as it will be engraved, and nothing touches wood until you approve it. This is also where we catch too-fine detail or too-long text and propose a fix.
  3. Engraving and delivery. Every piece is engraved in our own workshop in Rimavská Sobota, Slovakia, and delivered across the EU — with free shipping on orders above €150 excl. VAT.

There is no minimum order, so the cheapest way to settle an internal debate about what to engrave is to order one piece and hold it.

If you already know what you want engraved, you are one upload away from seeing it. Send your idea through the quote form with your logo attached as PDF, SVG or PNG, and you will have real prices within 24 hours — and a proof to approve before a single line is burned.
